Pouteria sapota Var Gold F1

A rare and uniquely attractive first-generation hybrid, intended for high-end tropical cultivation and high-quality commercial production. A vigorous, evergreen tree 8 to 12 meters tall, with a dense, rounded crown and dark green, leathery leaves that appear light coppery-gold on new growth. Light brown, less fissured bark exudes a light milky sap when cut. This variety is suited to tropical and subtropical climates, tolerating temperatures as low as -2°C. It requires full sun. It prefers deep, well-drained soil and is tolerant of sandy and loamy soils. The ideal pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, and water stagnation should be avoided. It is recommended to plant 5 to 6 meters apart. The small, white, fragrant flowers appear in late spring on old wood. The oval to round fruits weigh 0.7 to 1.8 kg, with a smooth, golden skin and a buttery, golden-orange flesh with a rich, sweet flavor that combines flavors of mango and pumpkin. The tree begins fruiting 3 to 4 years after planting and produces consistent annual production once established. The variety has good resistance to moderate drought, heat, and wind, while being relatively sensitive to extreme cold and standing water.
